07/16/2023 (Hebrews 2:5-18) – Now we return to Jesus' superiority to the angels. He became, only for a little while, lower in position to the angels when He took on flesh. The LORD Jesus Christ took on manhood so that He could die a substitutionary death on the cross, thereby saving those who would come to Him in faith. Those that are saved are now sanctified, or made holy, by Christ; meaning that Christ's righteousness has become our righteousness, and our standing before God both now and forevermore is as holy and guiltless. Why would God do such a loving act? It is because it is in accordance with His nature to love and save. In fact, Jesus loves us so much that He not only died for us, but He took on the form of a man and experienced all the sufferings and temptations of life so that He could be our perfect High Priest, understanding our deepest pains and sufferings. After accomplishing His mission, Christ was and is now seated in a position of authority at the right hand of the Father, is putting all things under His rule, and is constantly interceding on behalf of the members of the saved Church of God.
07/09/2023 (Hebrews 2:1-4) – This passage is an interjection into the description of Jesus' superiority to the angels. This passage explains that since Jesus is exactly who He says He is, the reader should give heed to the Gospel message before it slips away. Every sin will receive a just reward – death – unless the Gospel message is accepted. Further, those that understand the Gospel and refuse it will receive a worse punishment in Hell than those who have never heard. This miraculous Gospel is the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises, was confirmed by many miraculous signs, and is the only way to the Father; why would anyone refuse this great Gift?
07/02/2023 (Hebrews 1:4-14) – Quoting many times from the Old Testament, this passage states Jesus' superiority to all of creation, specifically angels. Angels are seen in Hebrew literature as the highest most powerful beings next to God Himself, but Jesus is even better than them. He is the Son of God, being of the same substance and inheriting all things. He is also God in the flesh, being the pre-existent Lord over all things and having made all things, and will trample His enemies and rule over all of creation, including the angels, forever. Thus, chapter 1 has stated Jesus' superiority as Prophet, Priest, and King of a much better covenant.
06/18/2023 (Hebrews 1:1–3) – This passage states that God spoke through the Old Testament prophets in times past and that He spoke through His Son, Jesus Christ, in the last days (the time leading up to the completion of the New Testament). Throughout the Old Testament times, people looked forward to the promise that would be given through the New Covenant in Christ; and as such, they were given prophecies of better things to come that were later perfectly fulfilled in Christ. In this passage, we also see that Jesus is the heir – legal owner – of all things, that He created all things, that He is the exact same substance and image as the Father, and that He currently holds all things in the universe together by His power as sovereign King of the universe. Finally, Jesus, having made one perfect sacrifice that purified sin once and for all, sat down at the Father's right hand as a symbol of power and rest.
